Our Weekend Follies

Saturday morning, Joe came and got the 4 older kids from our house at about 9 in the morning and can I tell you...my baby cried for about an hour. He hates when the kids leave! That being said, anybody want to tell me what I'm going to do when they go back to school on Wednesday? I think I'll die to death. That being said...!

So saturday afternoon, Mike had to work, so he was in the office most of the day, and I basically tried to keep a raving lunatic from running back into see if he could sit on Daddy's lap and "help" him work. We watched a variety of Sing-A-Longs, Little Einsteins and Charlie and Lola until he finally collapsed on the floor at noon. Then I got dressed for the day. At noon. Because of a person who weighs less than 25 lbs. Amazing.

That night, we took Harper over to his grandma Easley's house so she could watch him while we went to the adult session of our Stake Conference. He loves it there because she thinks everything he does is amazing and hilarious, so he has an attentive audience and what 13 month old doesn't love being the center of attention?

Anyway, the conference was really awesome, they talked a lot about food storage and a whole lot about family history. Our Stake President, Pres. Miskin, set up a huge screen and had a live view of the new FamilySearch Indexing site. Did you read in the recent Ensigns about how you can go there and sign up and do live indexing of names for the church? See, call me retarded, but I didn't know this was even possible for those of us who don't have a lot of time to dedicate to their family history. Anyway, we went home and Mike and I are now totally obsessed with this. Michael's family hasn't been done that we know about, and it's awesome for both of us to know that there is so much to be done for him. It's really cool and simple. Pres. Miskin had a lady who claimed to be totally computer illiterate get up there, she was totally cute by the way, about 80 years old...and anyway, he had her do an entire family in about oh...5 minutes? So cool! Who needs solitare when there's all this indexing to be done???

The kids came home today around 3 from being at the beach for the last 24 hours with Joe, and I made the girls go shower and get ready for a young women's fireside we had tonight by the girl who posed for the painting called "Add to Your Faith Virtue; and to Virtue Knowledge" by Walter Rane. She posed for the picture when she was 15, and now she's 22, goes to BYU and expecting her first baby with her super cute husband. Anyway, she talked about being virtuous and getting a good education. It was really good. This is her below...

Joe bought Jonah, Casey and Kenzie their backpacks today for school, and that was really nice. Now we just need to get the rest of their school clothes and new shoes and a few more school supplies and we're good to go. Mike's doing 352 side jobs in addition to his 9-5'er because let me tell ya, big kids ain't cheap. He's such a good guy, I loves that man o'mine. I'm a lucky girl...

The end.

Sounds like a busy weekend! But it sounds like it was good! What exactly is the indexing for? I'm not big on the family history terminology. That's all my mom! hehe

Basically, you sign in and download a page that some census person filled out in 1900 (I'm working Louisiana right now) and it tells the family name, number, who the family members are, how many kids they have, how old they are, where their parents were born etc. Then I retype it after I read off the hand written pages, then I submit it to Salt Lake where they send it to the family history sites/temples etc. It's crazy. I love it. I just got done doing 150 more names in the last hour. It's so addictive.

what in the world do mormons need lists of names from 1900 for?

It's for everybody to use. Familysearch.org is so people, like YOU Kristen, who want to look up their ancestors. Mike found his great uncle and grandfather for his grandma who was trying to do their history on this site. Even non-mormons like to do geneology.

As a matter of fact, just by googling the site, I found multiple news reports and articles about how people of every denomination and race use this site and Ancestry.com as a free way to look up their family history. USA Today, CBS, NBC, The New York Times to name a few. Here's the first article I found from the Cincinnati Post:

Dang! Sounds fun actually! I'll have to look it up! I guess it would be a good addiction to have!

That's right Lyd. Interestingly enough, Mike's mom was just talking about doing hers since her family is all from Japan and Korea. She's not a member either. Oh and Tiff just pointed out that in her American History class this next semester, they're required to do a 5 generation family tree, and her teacher is Mr. Goldman, which is a mighty jewish name. I remember doing family trees and some geneology in elementary school, did you guys do that stuff at Tobler Lyd?

Oh and Kris, I was going to tell you...when I say I'm doing names, what happens is that I download a scanned in copy of a cencus bureau report from Louisiana, mine happen to be plantation records of black families, and then I type what is handwritten into the database, and then after it is double checked, everyone in the world can go on to see the records of their family. I think it's a pretty sweet resource.

Yeah, we always did that stuff. I always loved doing it because I already had everything done! You should tell Tiff to tell her teacher that she is related to Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) and to Prince John!

Oh great. I know that once I hit that link...I'm in for it! I will be obsessed, and I know that I have too many other things to be obsessed about right now. However, this would be the better thing to be obsessed about than digiscrappin. huh? Oh no. I can feel it coming.

BTW, I am loving your girl's blogs. They make me laugh. You so lucky. They so cute.

Lyd - I forgot about Mark Twain!

Tori - it's so fun, I love wondering who these people are as I put in their names. Also, the girls blogs are fun, they're new to blogging so they feel special that they have their own "Website"

This is what you're "the end" reminded me of:

"I saw the perpetrator advance towards the victim at a high rate of speed. His head was thrown back, his shoulder and arm cocked, indicating an attack position. Perp grabbed the victim. I removed my weapon from its secure hiding place--"

"Which is where?"

"Irrelevant. Discharged it at a little over a meter into the perpetrator's eyes, nose and face area, rendering him utterly and completely disabled. Then I contacted the authorities... The end."
